Education and Outreach

The U.S. GLOBEC National Coordinating Office seeks to transition results of the U.S. GLOBEC program to applications in Ecosystem-Based Management and to Marine Science Education. The transition to Ecosystem-Based Management will be accomplished in close collaboration with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). Two workshops will be held to identify and initiate projects that would transition specific GLOBEC results and capabilities to applications by NMFS. Oral reports and/or demonstrations of these transition activities will be presented at the final GLOBEC Symposium in 2010. A contribution to the GLOBEC report series will be prepared documenting the two EBM workshops, the transition process, the outcomes of the transition activities and the lessons learned to inform similar future activities.

The transition of GLOBEC results to Marine Science Education will be accomplished in close collaboration with the National COSEE Coordinating Council. A small number (3 - 5) of specific projects will be initiated that pair a GLOBEC investigator with a COSEE center to incorporate the investigator’s results into a planned COSEE activity. Oral reports and/or demonstrations of these transition activities will be presented at the final GLOBEC Symposium and, if appropriate, in education-oriented sessions at the 2010 Ocean Sciences meeting. Finally, a workshop will be held to bring together educators identified by COSEE with researchers from GLOBEC and other large NSF marine programs to consider and to report on how large programs like GLOBEC could do better in their planning and execution at promoting marine science education. The product of the workshop will be a contribution to the GLOBEC report series with recommendations to future programs about developing and achieving program-level education goals.
